Back to school, a golden re-opening!

It was a golden re-opening after unexpected closure for few days. We had scheduled "Yellow Colour Day" on 24th August and that was the day when the school was re-opening. KITE School was decorated with various yellow colour objects. Many shades of yellow were shining and smiling right from the gate. Children started coming in yellow bright dresses but some moms just forgot about it and brought their child in neat school uniform. We could see the disappointment on their faces...

Many activities were integrated along with the theme. Every child had to participate in the activity designed for their class. More than the colour-recognisation it was the association of different things that triggered further and deeper learning. During their colouring, dabbing, sticking activities on the worksheets children were delightfully involved.

Children were encouraged to ask questions and surely kindergarten kids had many questions. We had displayed an oversized cutout of half lemon. One child argued that it looked like lemon but lemons are not of this size therefore it must be a big sweetlime. And there were kids, particularly in playgroup, who were just enjoying in their own way. Whattafun!

Paranoid government spoiled our school's "Dahi Handi"

We had been preparing for this spectacular celebration for weeks. KITE School organises 'Dahi Handi' for little ones in a special stylised way. It ensures every child's participation and one moment of thrill when the child is given a chance to actully hit the 'Handi'. Everything is staged and the result is always 'win-win' for everyone and they cherish this memory for ever.

But this year the government has declared seven days forced holiday in all the schools because of the reported cases of swine flu and deaths because of it. I do not understand its justification. People cant just sit in closed doors for days together in cities like Mumabi. Media should make people more aware than scare. And the government should get into better management mode than just forcing stupid dictats.

Coming back to KITE School activities, we had missed one opportunity of celebration but the other one is not far behind. KITE School will be celebrating "Yellow Day" on 24th August and we expect golden smiles all around that day.

KITE School's field trips

In the last week of July, 2009, it wasn't raining much, it was cloudy though. And we were just waiting for such a spell for two-three days!
We took our Junior and Senior KG kids to Chena Creek in our TATA Winger school bus on two consequitive days. The kids already had their EVE session on "How does it rain" and related topics, such as, water cycle, water-logging and water transport etc. earlier in July itself. All the children were so happy and excited.

It was real fun with learning. Some of them 'discovered' few things about nature on their own... a very funny tree, a weird insect and a mirror like drop on a leaf! They were exploring the surrounding freely. Of course, teachers, Principal Madam, maid and other staff were keeping a watchful eye on every child. Everyone accompanying the kids was instructed well about the dos and donts, lists, field trip cautions and supplies.

It was a learning experience for us also. We learnt the way children perceive complex things in simple ways. They also interpret in in their own ways. Educators should find the correlation and apply it in their explanation of concepts.

At KITE School, we have decided to have field trips as often as we can.

Can you suggest a new location which is not very far from our school and yet can be an exciting field trip point?
